ON MONDAY 21/05/07 AT 10am A DEMONSTRATION WAS ARRANGED BY B.I.A.S.A. (The Boating Industry Assoc Of South Aust.), FOR WATER LAND AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION, AT RIVERGLEN MARINA ON THE JERVOIS RD SOUTH OF MURRAY BRIDGE.
THIS DEMONSTRATION OF THE EFFECT THAT BOATING HAS ON THE RIVER ENVIRONMENT WAS NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

THESE IMAGES OF THIELES RESERVE MURRAY BRIDGE, CLEARLY SHOW THE DEGRADATION OF THE RIVERBANK IN THIS AREA.
MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE IMMEDIATE RIVERBANK UPSTREAM FROM THE BOAT RAMP AND RESERVE CAN BE ASSOCIATED WITH IT'S VICINITY TO THE DROP OFF AREA FOR SKIERS, WHERE BOATS APPROACH THE AREA AT AN ANGLE THEN TURN AWAY AS THE SKIER IS RELEASED CAUSING MASSIVE WAVE ACTION ON THE RECENTLY EXPOSED "LOW RIVERBANK".
THEORETICALLY THIS EROSION COULD CONTINUE THROUGH THE ROADWAY TO THE CLIFF FACE.

NOVEMBER 2008 NOTCHING CONTINUES AT THIELE'S RESERVE IN MURRAY BRIDGE
THIS NOTCHING AND RESULTANT COLLAPSE IS A DIRECT RESULT OF WAVE ACTION CAUSED BY SKI AND WAKE BOARD BOATS DROPPING OFF AND TURNING BACK TO THE RESERVE.
ATTEMPT TO REPAIR RIVER BANK
A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME.
COUNCIL HAS BEEN ADVISED THAT THIS EROSION
COULD GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE CLIFF FACE.
THE THREE MAIN CONCERNS FOR RIVERBANK COLLAPSE ARE:
SLIPPAGE SLUMPING CRACKING
SLIPPAGE :
THIS AS EXACTLY THE SAME AS ANY MUDSLIDE THAT CAN BE SEEN IN NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES.
SLIPPAGES /MUDSLIDES HAVE BEEN OBSERVED IN AREAS ALONG THE MURRAY WHERE SIGNIFICANT HUMAN INTERFERENCE (E.g.LEVEE BANKS),HAS OCCURRED, AND WHERE THESE ALTERATIONS HAVE BEEN ADJACENT TO DEEP WATER.
LONG ISLAND MURRAY BRIDGE, AND THE MYPOLONGA AREA ARE GOOD EXAMPLES.
SLUMPING:
THIS EFECT IS CLEARLY CAUSED THOUGH NOTCHING.
ie THE RIVERBANK IS UNDERCUT (OR NOTCHED) BY WAVE ACTION WITH THE RESULTANT OVERHANG "SLUMPING".
CRACKING:
THIS CAN BE OBSERVED IN DRY RIVERBEDS & DAMS,WHERE THE MOISTURE IS SUB-SURFACE AND THE TOPSOIL DRIES OUT.
THE AMOUNT OF CRACKING IS ENTIRELY DEPENDANT UPON THE TYPE OF SOIL.
TO SUGGEST THAT WHEN DRILLING, UPON REACHING THE WATER TABLE THE MUD IS LIKE "TOOTHPASTE" OR "CUSTARD" IS SIMPLY STATING THE OBVIOUS.
ARGUMENTS THAT THIS IS A "CRUST" WAITING TO SLIDE INTO THE RIVER, WITHOUT DEEP WATER TO SLIDE INTO, BECOME DIFFICULT TO SUBSTANTIATE.
RIVERBANK EROSION AT TORRUMBARRY CAUSED BY WASH FROM POWER BOATING.
RIVERBANK COLLAPSE AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE NATIONAL CHANNEL, TOORUMBARRY HEADWORKS. THIS IRRIGATION PROJECT HAS VAST RAMIFICATIONS, AND THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHANNEL IS BEING TORN AWAY.
SHOULD A NATIONAL ASSET BE BETTER PROTECTED
